Powerful features of Joomla CMS

Powerful features of Joomla CMS
Alan Smith
Joomla is widely used around the world as a Content Management System. Joomla provides many useful features that simply make it a good choice to opt from a traditional HTML-based website to Joomla.

Let’s look into some of the reasons why people use Joomla as CMS

1)Joomla supports many international languages. This will be really useful to you because if your business covers many regions across the world and only English readers are not your customers. When you install Joomla, it will work with a language extension, it is possible that for your website visitors to select a language in which they want to view your website. Imagine you will be able to customize the language with just one click of the mouse.

2)Joomla supports user authentication. It proves as good help to multiple users as they can access the website at the same time; each user can access the website with his or her own user permissions. While developing a traditional website, developers have to add authentication and user access features but in Joomla, this is a built-in feature. Using it with extensions you can build a social networking website for little or almost no cost with faster rate compare to engaging developer to build the same.

3)Templates are useful to achieve a consistent look and feel across the website. Now no need to worry about an errant page destroying the look of your entire website. Joomla shows all web pages within a template, and the template can be manipulated at any point in time. Due to the reason there is no need to go through each and every web page in order to change how it looks. Just one click is all it takes to change the look and feel of the entire website.

4)Joomla makes it easy for many people to work on a website at the same time. Now it’s not necessary to worry about an errant page destroying the look of your entire website. Once user has given the proper permissions, anyone with a web browser can create content to use on the website and can publish it . Furthermore, when you publish website again then the newly published pages across the website will have same template which makes sure a consistent look and feel is maintained across the entire website.

5)Joomla allows the use of extensions, this can be counted as one of the most useful feature of it. Extensions are software programs that are pre-installed onto an existing website which gives the website extra functionality which the standard that its installation doesn't provide. With hundreds of available extensions, Joomla has power to do almost anything that a website wants without needing further customized development. All you need is to find the correct extension.

Paypal to let you shop, pay bills on TV

Paypal to let you shop, pay bills on TV
Dennis Schooley

Soon you will be able to shop and pay your bills through your TV remote control. Online shopping behemoth Paypal has partnered with FourthWall Media and Canoe Ventures to roll out TV shopping or T-Commerce.
First glimpsed at the Paypal X Innovation conference in October, the TV Buy Button allows viewers to access digital wallets to instantly buy stuff they see on television.

“We at PayPal believe that the wallet should live and will live ‘in the cloud,’” wrote Osama Bedier, vice president of platform, mobile and new ventures at Paypal in the company’s blog.

Bedier said increasingly enabling the television to have access to the Internet will pave new ways with which companies can sell to users directly. An example would be a husband watching TV and seeing a popular TV host wearing a pretty dress or a piece of jewelry that he though would be a perfect gift for his wife. With a few clicks on the remote control, the viewer can instantly purchase the item through his Paypal account.

The TV Buy Button is part of the bigger picture of TV application developer FourthWall’s enhance binary interchange format (EBIF) platform. EBIF applications and widgets, designed to promote an advanced interactive TV viewing experience, have existing cable TV customers like Comcast, Charter Communications, and Time Warner Cable, as well as major set-top box vendors.

Paypal’s TV Buy Button will work through set-top boxes and existing remote controls equipped with EBIF.

Social Bookmarking Service – A Useful Link Building Tool

Social Bookmarking Service – A Useful Link Building Tool
Krispy Anderson
Information sharing has always been the foundation stone of the internet revolution and not much has changed about this aspect. However, technological advancements keep happening at a very rapid pace, and today we have a new concept, social bookmarking service that takes information sharing to new heights. It allows the sharing of links and websites through social bookmarking like never before.

All of us at some point have participated in social booking, quite possibly without actually being aware of the fact. When you email a website link to someone you are in effect participating in social bookmarking.

The simplest definition of social bookmarking is to tag a website you think may be useful at some later date, to you or to someone else. Since the bookmarks are online sharing becomes very easy to do and there you have it – the concept of social bookmarking.

Since its launch in 1996, social bookmarking submission has come to be known as a useful tool for link building, finding businesses and target markets and attracting traffic to websites.

Manual social bookmarking like other internet marketing techniques has its own advantages. It is a means to promote sales, develop a constant flow of traffic to a website and attract potential customers. The initial process will take time but you can focus on the end goal, which is to bring potential buyers to your site and convert interest in your product or service to sales.

Manual social bookmarking service helps you to get quality inbound links and attract organic traffic to your site. A quality service can help direct visitors to your site, enhance brand exposure and build links for your site. Social bookmarking is being leveraged to the maximum extent by servcies that know their business.

With the millions of people who have access to the internet and use it daily, online businesses would be making a big mistake by not tapping into this great resource. Social interaction and networking has literally exploded onto the internet scene and there is so much of it online. Making use of a good manual social bookmarking service can help you get connected to forums, blogs, online communities and networking groups that make up your target audience.

Social bookmark submission will help to optimize website visibility through the specialized efforts of the professionals you hire to do the job. The service provider you choose is equipped to put bookmarking servcies to productive use, as well as offer online marketing strategies that benefit the company in terms of maximum profit generation.

Seasoned professionals who offer social bookmarking services know how to take full advantage of the concept to direct traffic to the website and market resources for optimal benefit. Service providers are well aware of the right categories for manual submission of social bookmarks. Websites with higher page rank and the relevant categories are carefully selected and all the links that result are one way, consistent and long term.

Through the use of social bookmarking techniques, proficient services can position a company in the relevant categories on social bookmarking websites to drive specific targeted traffic to the company site.

Facebook Mitigates Vulnerability Identified by Security Researchers at Indiana University

Facebook Mitigates Vulnerability Identified by Security Researchers at Indiana University
 Peter Martin

Cybercriminals have been proactive in exploiting security flaws on social media sites. Facebook has suffered numerous breaches. While, developers are faced with the constant challenge to innovate and enhance user experience, attackers work round the clock and explore websites to find vulnerabilities.

Recently, information security researchers at Indiana University discovered a security flaw in Facebook, which enables attackers to access confidential information without user consent. The security flaw is associated with the Facebook platform code, which allows other websites to gain access to basic information related to Facebook members. For instance, researchers observed that Facebook allows bing.com to access any Facebook member’s basic information such as name, gender and other personal information. Several other websites have additional permissions to post content on users behalf. Attackers may create simulated websites of other websites, which have permission to access the user information. Once, they gain access to a user account by faking permissions, they may extract sensitive personal information of the users or post fake and derogatory messages on behalf of a legitimate user.

The stolen information may be used to create fake social media accounts, contact friends of the user impersonating as a Facebook member. Therefore, the security flaw poses information security risk for users. They may also place malicious links on the account.
Information security professionals at Facebook have mitigated the security flaw. Usually, developers use ethical hacking to identify security holes. In this case, the vulnerability was identified by Rui Wang and Zhou Li. Developers and product vendors are now encouraging security researchers to identify vulnerabilities in websites, web applications and security products so that corrective action could be initiated before their exploitation by cyber criminals.

Users must change their privacy settings to allow only their legitimate friends and relatives to view their personal information. Developers of social media sites must ensure data security, integrity and confidentiality for continued use of the innovative platform for social interaction and communication.

How Viruses and Spyware Get In to your computer

How Viruses and Spyware Get In to your computer

Spyware and viruses infect an individual or business computer in many ways, from the obvious methods to the sneaky, back door tricks. Viruses are designed to interrupt and alter normal computer functioning and spyware is intended to literally spy on its victims, all the while recording their personal information. Either infection, no matter what the method in which it intruded by, can cause an array of difficulties for the computer user.

Often times viruses and spyware are put into your computer by opening insecure emails and sharing files with infected computers. Spyware also intrudes as a "ride along" on third party software you might purchase and download online. In other situations spyware and viruses find a "back door" in your computer and use it to install their malicious codes. Signs your computer has been affected by viruses or spyware could be unusual behavior and slower functioning.

Unauthorized dial out from your internet connection are most likely spyware applications. Other common signs include browser crashes, longer boot ups, more pop ups and possibly missing files.
To get rid of any virus or spyware infection back up your files and scan them for viruses and/or spyware. Keep your virus and spyware software updated and run the scans regularly. If you have no spyware or virus scanning software it is recommended you find a free programs that will detect and warn you of possible infections.

Once you have the proper software it is important to get rid of spyware infections and viruses as well as protect your privacy and your computer from further invasions. If spyware has latched onto your computer and at scanning tool catches it you will most likely have to remove the entire programs to completely rid yourself of those spyware applications.

How to reduce Computer problems?

How to reduce Computer problems?

How can I prevent Computer problems? This is a question that people have asked me many times. The entire process of reducing Computer problems can be bundled under the banner of Computer Preventive Maintenance.

It is not rocket science and you don’t have to be an IT professional to keep your PC in a good shape. Any computer user can follow guidelines I have mentioned below and can reduce their PC problems dramatically.

Use this article as a computer maintenance tutorial.

So what you should do as part of preventive maintenance?

1.Use a good anti virus program. This is the most important piece of work in preventive maintenance. Installing the anti virus program is not good enough. You should do following as well.
-Set-up the program to download and install updates automatically.
-Schedule periodic full system scans.
-Check the virus definitions date regularly and see whether it is up to date.

2.Set-up your PC to Download and install “Windows Updates” automatically.
Windows updates include Operating System patches for bugs and PC security related issues. These patches can reduce many unknown computer problems.

3.Install anti Spyware program to detect Spyware tools.

4.Install a Personal Firewall. Most of the anti virus programs are bundled with a Personal Firewalls these days. Personal firewall is a barrier between your PC and the outside world. This can prevent your PC from hackers and Spyware tools.

5.Do not download and install unknown software from Internet. This is the biggest mistake most of the PC users are doing. Some of this software can damage the Windows registry, which cause lot of errors.

6.Uninstall unnecessary programs installed in your PC.

7.Be very careful when you download music from the Internet. Always stick to one trustworthy web site.

8.Perform Scandisk periodically to check the Hard Drive.

9.Delete temporary Internet files.

How To Keep Your Computer Virus Free

How To Keep Your Computer Virus Free

Computer viruses can and do strike at any moment.
They assault your computer by destroying data, and
rendering your system useless. The very first line of
defense is to boost your knowledge of these well
hidden malicious codes.

Malicious codes come in three basic formulas.Viruses
are small programs that reproduce themselves for the
purpose of causing some damage.

Trojan Horses are disguised as gifts which may come
as an attachment in your email.Once ran its purpose is
to cause do harm to your system as well.

Then you may come in contact with does worms which
cause damage by copying themselves over networks
as wells as individual systems. These codes alters not
just one system but several within a network.

After you enhance your knowledge of malicious code,
know the symptoms of an infected system.Strange
PC behavior,an increase or decrease of data in a file,
pop up messages, random graphics, and files being
deleted are some symptoms of your system having
a virus.

The best way to find and remove viruses is with the
installation popular anti virus software from Norton
or McAfee. These programs readily identify infections
as well as promptly remove them.

Norton Anti vitus installs easy and a configuration
wizard runs after the computer has been re-booted.
This software offers several options that give you
the best virus scanning options.Use the neat update
feature to keep up with all the new viruses.Their user
friendly configuration leave no doubt in what and how
you want this software to perform.

What should you do to prevent virus infection if you
don't have anti virus software installed on your PC?
We should all give a word of thanks for the Internet.
Rush over to one the free virus scanning services
which will scan your hard drive for malicious codes.

Trend Micro's Housecall scans your drive for viruses,
trojans and worms. They ask you to register first but
you can scan without registering. Why not go over to

Don't do it.Don't say, yes,I will get anti virus protection
soon.It will be when you wait one day too many and
realize your computer must have a virus because it is
deleting files,randomly showing graphics,performing
one task when it should be performing another task,
and other strange things.Take the time or invest the
money for virus protection right now.

How To Prevent Spyware Attacking Your Computer

How To Prevent Spyware Attacking Your Computer

Spyware is software or hardware installed on a computer
without a user's knowledge. It gathers information and
reports it back to its source. It ties up bandwidth, slows
down CPU speed and generally is a nuisance.

In its more malicious forms, it can disrupt the PC so much
that it is unusable; it can run up modem bills, it can spam
or send copies of itself to everyone in your address book
and it can download pornographic material to your PC.

The last is probably the one most likely to make everyone
stand up and take notice. Downloading porn at the office
can get you fired, downloading child porn anywhere can get
you arrested.

The only way to keep these and all the other problems
associated with spyware from infecting your life and
disrupting your activities is prevention. As the old
saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of
cure.

There are numerous programs available (both for free and
for pay) that offer protection from spyware and its related
cohorts. Most free programs remove spyware that's already
been downloaded and installed to your machine, such as Ad-
Aware, one of the first original anti-spyware programs.

The free version requires that you scan to capture and
remove spyware. The pay for version includes a real-time
scanner that actually prevents spyware from downloading or
installing itself.

There are numerous other products on the market, but don't
be taken in by their pronouncements of being anti-spyware.
Be wary, a few of the free programs are just spyware
themselves.

Security for your PC at the home includes using up-to-date
virus software, installing an effective firewall, employing
reputable anti-spyware tools, making sure all patches and
being sure to install all updates for the operating system.
The best thing to do is to avoid risky online behavior or
the downloading of every free offer that literally "pops
up".

Never download anything from an unknown source. A lot of
home PC users can find their machines besieged by problems
because they downloaded something they weren't sure about
or just assumed was safe. Don't assume, be sure. You can
even check security settings for different websites you
visit. Be sure what you're downloading is from a reputable
source.

You wouldn't invite just anyone who knocked on your door
into your house; you shouldn't let any file or program into
your computer. Spyware at its best is a nuisance, and a
potentially dangerous and damaging element that can cost
you real time, and worse of all, money.

How to Choose Best and Suitable Computer?

How to Choose Best and Suitable Computer?

Computers become cheaper and faster every year.

Do you want to find best deal? Choose balance between high-quality components and price.

You can find other tips at http://ourmalaysia.org/computer/

To chose a computer:

1. Decide what is computer for. Do you use it for work, games, Internet, media, personal finances?

2. Choose type of processor, RAM memory, and speed. It depends on task. Read more computer magazines to understand what parameters are important for you. Random Access Memory (RAM) drives performance of your computer. The more is RAM, the more programs run smoothly and simultaneously.
For video editing or hardcore gaming use 2-4GB RAM, for running several programs use 512MB-1GB, for 1-2 programs use 256MB

Processor depends on clock speed, architecture, cache, and front side bus. You can find simple explanations on-line.

3. Read PC Magazine. They publish ratings of reliability usually in July. For Mac computer read Mac related magazines.

4. Buy a brand with high reliability. Check customer satisfaction tables.

5. Choose a company that offers a three-year parts-and-labor warranty. Be aware that the warranty is limited anyway. Read Fine Script!

6. Find out what parts are better. Understand that hard drives, CD-ROM, sound cards, video cards, network cards must be comparable to the processor.
Otherwise imagine a small cheap car with super powerful engine. It does not go fast. The wheels fall off.

Processor is the brain of your computer. You also need legs to run.

7. Buy the computer and monitor from the same company only if the monitor seems good.

8. Monitors are dirt-cheap now. Flat panels become cheap. From my personal experience it is 10 times easier to read from flat panel. There is no glare and no blinking. You can read 8 hours straight. Eyes are relaxed as if you read a book. It is still not so comfortable to read from flat-screen monitor.
You may have big discount or even free deal on flat panel if you buy from the same company. Decide what price you already to pay of comfort.

9. You will need to buy also software. Check if it is included and what type.

10. Remember if computer is sold cheap and looks reliable, some other features maybe excluded. For example lack of DVD writer or CD writer decreases price. Decide if you really need it. You can always buy it later as external device, though it will be full price then.
Sacrificing software or Limited Warranty, Services and Support Options reduces the price of computer.

11. Unless you are really rich it does not worth to buy very expensive computers. They will be much cheaper next year. Compare it with buying an expensive car. It looses value very fast.

12. Some companies have special business models.
For example, Dell sells computer on-line mostly. Besides, you practically build the computer yourself choosing the desired parts. This model allows Dell to avoid big storage facilities. They sell computers as they build. It allows the company to keep prices down 10-15% compare with the same configurations from other companies. Just go and check in store and then on-line. I did and found it is really cheaper.

From the other hand you need to wait several days or a week before your computer arrives. If you want to return computer, you will need to go to post office.

If you buy a 1000-dollar computer, it saves you 100-150.
Decide if it worth it.

Japanese computers are more expensive, though some people prefer them for reliability.

13. If you are real computer fun, you may build computer yourself. It is not so difficult. You have hand to hold screwdriver - you can do it. The parts are sold on-line. Just type them in "Search".

How to Backup Computer Files

How to Backup Computer Files

As I write this, it’s early December, and try as I might, I can’t remember what my new year’s resolution was last time around. One thing I can say with near hundred percent certainty is that whatever it was, I failed to keep it. Maybe you’re the same. Maybe you resolved to quit smoking, lose weight, or read more. We all make promises with ourselves, then fail to keep those promises. Worst of all, those promises might be exactly what we need most. Consider this: When was the last time you backed up your computer files? Last month? Last year? Never?

Let’s make a new year’s resolution together, you and I. Let’s promise to back up our computers. It’s important, I promise. Just yesterday the automatic backup feature in MS Word saved me about an hour’s work when my computer froze up. Given that I haven’t backed up my computer in almost a year, I can’t even imagine how much data I’d lose if I suffered a power surge or hard drive failure. It can happen to the best of us, and often does. Even high end hard drive manufacturers report an average failure rate of between five and eight per thousand every year. That may not sound like much, but let’s face it, somebody has to be those five to eight people. Feeling lucky? There are about 185 million household PCs in the U.S., according to Computer Industry Almanac, so that means about 150,000 hard drives fail each year. But even if your drive stays intact, about a tenth of all computers suffer minor data loss in any given year. A power surge, the magnets in your home stereo speakers, or even an accidental nudge can affect data storage. According to a report from the ONTRACK data recovery service, data loss can be caused by natural disasters (3% of cases), computer viruses (7%), software problems (14%), and plain old user error (a whopping 32%). Now, I’m sure you never hit a wrong keyboard button, but do you have a button on your computer that prevents a bolt of lightning? I didn’t think so.

WHEREAS our data is important, and disaster can befall even the most noble and undeserving of us, BE IT RESOLVED that you and I shall back up our computer files forthwith.

Amen, brothers and sisters. Now, where and how do we start?

STEP ONE to Backup Computer Files: Choosing Favorites

Not all files are important enough to preserve for posterity. The most critical files on a computer are its operating system files. If you’re a good little consumer, you bought the operating system and kept those CDs handy and secure from data loss. If you’re not, then remind yourself to go stand in the corner later. The drones at Microsoft did not work for years just to watch you steal their work. It’s people like you that keep Bill Gates from buying his second planet. Now that you’ve been suitably chastised, either go buy a legal copy of the operating system, or include the necessary files in your “must back up” list.

The same principle goes for software applications. Maybe you bought an ad and spyware blocker you really like, but the company that coded it has since gone out of business (perhaps because other consumers weren’t as scrupulous as you). If so, include the files you need to run the app in your must list.

Now it’s time to look at the remaining files on your computer and prioritize. If you’re not a digital packrat like me, it may be possible to save everything. If so, congratulations. I don’t have ten gigabytes of portable media at my disposal, so when I back up my computer, I’ll be leaving a few gigs of MP3s and questionable Windows Media files at risk. One of the first things I will save is the folder I use to save my writing assignments, because that data represents money in my pocket. I’ll back up my email address book, plus my digital photography and fiction writing efforts. I can live without “Milkshake” (what was I thinking?), but the guitar piece my friend recorded and sent to me is going on the list. Your results may vary.

STEP TWO to Backup Computer Files: In Which I Tell You Where You Can Put It

That’s right, this is the section in which I’ll tell you where to store your data. It’s not a good idea to put backup files on another drive on the same computer. That defeats the whole purpose. Duplicating your files on another computer in the same LAN is almost as risky, because computer viruses can spread as fast as an imaginary Anna Kournikova JPEG. You need to find a portable storage medium that can hold all the files on your must list. Your options include floppy diskettes, portable hard drives, optical drives, tape drives, and remote servers. We’ll look at each in turn.

Hard diskettes, the old familiar 3.5” squares, hold up to 1.44 megabytes of data. They’re cheap, but 1.44 MB is less than two percent of the ten gigs of data on my hard drive. Even if each of those files were smaller than 1.44 MB (and each weren’t), I’m not keen on the idea of buying, labeling, and storing fifty diskettes. Next idea, please.

Most computer experts rely on removable hard drives for memory backups. The most popular of these drives are the Zip drive from Iomega and the ORB drive from Castlewood. They’re relatively inexpensive and hold up to two gigs of data. Basically, you’ll save your data on a Zip disk, then transfer it from the disk to the portable drive. The catch is that removable drives fail about as often as regular hard drives. They may even be more susceptible to damage from dust and rough handling. A sub-option here is to use a permanent hard drive as a removable drive. At up to two hundred gigs, conventional hard drives are bigger than removable drives, and prices have dropped enough in recent years to make this idea practical. Whatever kind of hard drive you decide to use, make sure to keep it isolated from dust, magnetic charges, and static electricity.

Optical drives use a laser to store information, rather than a magnet. Even if you’re not a tech junkie, that’s probably enough information to give you a clearer idea what we’re talking about: namely, CDs and DVDs. Less common are EO (erasable optical) and WORM (write once, read many) media; they’re less common because they cost over $1000 per drive. CDs, on the other hand, cost less than a buck and can hold up to 650 megabytes. DVDs hold up to five gigs and cost about fifteen dollars apiece. Most computers nowadays have either a CD or DVD writer (or both), but write times can be slow. My CD writer, for example, works best on the 300 kilobyte per second setting—if then. I’ll be using the remote server option. At $250 and up, tape drives are more expensive and slower than hard drives or optical media, hence less common, but also extremely reliable.

Remote servers are third party companies that store data online for a fee. This is a great option for broadband Internet users, especially people like me who don’t own a reliable data writer. SkyDesk runs Backup.com, Back-Up Solutions maintains BackUpHelp.com, and Iomega hosts iServer (Iomega.com/iStorage). XDrive.com, once a free service, now charges ten bucks a month for up to five gigs of storage. Promotions and other rates change, so it’s a good idea to shop around before selecting a remote storage service.

STEP THREE to Backup Computer Files: Git ’er Done

Now it’s time to put the files you want to save on the storage medium you’ve chosen. There are several ways to do this. Your CD writer, for example, may come with proprietary disk writing software. That application may even include a backup option. If it does, and you’re more familiar with that software than Windows features, then that’s the way to go. Otherwise, backup is still relatively easy on all MS operating systems since Windows 98. Windows 98, Windows ME, and Windows XP Professional include a built-in Backup utility. To run it, just click on Start, then Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, then Backup. How easy was that? If you’re using the XP Home edition, you may need to add the utility manually. If so, insert the Windows XP CD into your disk drive and wait for the “Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP” screen. (You may need to double-click the CD icon in My Computer.) Then click on Perform Additional Tasks and Browse This CD. In Windows Explorer, double-click the ValueAdd folder, then Msft, then Ntbackup. Double-clicking on Ntbackup.msi will install the utility. Once it’s installed, you can also run the program by clicking Start and Run, then typing msbackup.exe (Windows 98 and Windows ME) or ntbackup.exe (Windows XP) in the Open field. Click OK, and you’ll be off to the races.

Incidentally, the Windows XP Backup utility also includes a bonus application called the Automated Recovery Wizard. This creates a bootable floppy that initiates backup if the hard drive must be replaced. Other options for “disaster recovery” include BackUp MyPC from Stomp (StompInc.com, $79) and Norton Ghost 9.0 from Symantec (Norton.com, $69.95). Ghost actually allows users to duplicate the contents of their computer over the Internet. Both have earned stellar reviews from top PC magazines.

Don’t let another month go by without protecting the files you value most. My girlfriend justifies her messy car by saying she “lives out of it.” Well, I live out of my computer. It’s not just my office; it’s the home of cherished memories in the form of pictures, MP3, and other data files. I’m resolved to keep it safe.

How to Backup Computer Data?

How to Backup Computer Data?

Eventually, everyone faces a data disaster. Are you ready? Unless all of your electronic files are expendable, you should be making backup copies of your most important data on a regular basis.

"Your backup is as important as your data and your time--because that's what it's going to cost you if you lose it," says Cheryl Frogley-Rawson, an IT consultant with Helpin' Out, a computer support company for small businesses and individuals. "Even if you have hard copies, it's going to cost you time to enter the information again."

·Back up regularly, back up often. It is important that you get into the habit of backing up your files on a regular basis. Just having things stored on your hard drive is not enough. A computer crash, a virus, or a hard drive failure can wipe out everything. Don't make this simple mistake! Back up everything at least once a week. Daily is better. If you use your computer daily, it is best to back up important files daily and other data weekly. At the absolute minimum, back up your files monthly.

·Keep several backup copies. Never back up over a prior backup copy - keep several copies over time so that you can back up more than one version if necessary. Remember, a problem that is backed up will remain a problem when restored!

·Be selective. You don't have to do a total system backup. In fact, why waste your time backing up all those executable program files when you can easily re-install them from the original media in case of a problem. Just back up your important files. Backing up the entire hard drive is time-consuming, not practical, and should not be done. A backup of specific data files is the way to go.

·Know what's really important. The most important things to copy are files you create yourself. Be they text documents, e-mail messages, pictures, or game saves, if you made them, be sure to keep their current backup handy. Beyond that, it's helpful to back up the configuration settings for any programs you use, along with critical Windows data such as the registry.

·Organize your folders. Backing up is easy if you set your folder structure properly. It's faster and easier to back up if all your files and subfolders are in a single folder, rather than having your documents scattered across the hard drive. The My Documents folder is a good place to store files on any Windows computer. When all your personal files are in one place you are less likely to forget a file when you back up. Organization can be the key.

·Use backup software to automate your everyday backup tasks. You don't have to copy your files manually. You can accidentally omit something, or simply make a mistake. A decent backup program creates the backup of your data reliably and automatically, and it will notify you in case of any problem, and will log the backup activity in detail. In addition, there are a lot more useful features, all usually for a very low price.

5 Simple Tips To Increase Your Computer Speed

5 Simple Tips To Increase Your Computer Speed

If you're a computer expert, you'll probably already know about these tips (hopefully this will provide you with a little reminder). If you're not an expert, don't worry - these tips are simple, and don't require a lot of computer experience.

While an old computer will never operate at the same speed as a newer (and bigger & faster) computer, you can help your computer stay as "young & healthy" as possible.

1) Disk Cleanup

Performing a disk cleanup regularly is a good idea. Whenever you "surf the internet", open attachments, delete files, your computer saves a record of your activity. Many of these files are harmless, and individually are very small. But if you spend a lot of time on your computer, before long you'll take up enough space to slow your computer down a bit.

Disk Cleanup is a Windows utility that helps keep unused and unwanted files from taking up extra storage space on your computer. You can think of it as "spring cleaning” for your computer.

Basically, it removes files that may have once been useful or used but now are just taking up extra room that could be used for more useful programs and files.

To perform a disc cleanup, click on the Start button on the bottom left of your computer screen, then Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disc Cleanup. A small box will pop up, allowing you to select the files to delete (most files are OK to delete, but if you are unsure, it is best to not select the file). Then click OK, and the unused files will be removed.

If you've never done a disk cleanup on your computer, now is a good time to get started. Then, depending on how much you use your computer, you can perform a disk cleanup every few weeks to keep your computer running smoothly!

2) Defragmenting Your Computer

Another way to improve the performance of your computer is to defragment your hard drive. What is defragmenting, and why do you need to do it? Here's a simple explanation:

Basically, defragmenting is putting files back where they belong. With the files in the proper order, your computer will run more efficiently.

You don't need to hire a computer expert to defragment your computer. It's simple to do. You just need to plan ahead, because if you have a lot of "stuff" on your computer, it could take a while.

And it's best not to use your computer while defragmenting.

Not sure how to defragment your computer? You can either click on your computer's help file (Click the "Start" button on the bottom left of your computer screen, then Help), or click on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Defragment - for most computers) .

Keep in mind that the actual wording is slightly different depending on the operating system you use (Windows 95, 98, XP, etc) so you might need to refer to your computer's help file.

Periodically defragmenting your computer will keep it running smoothly!

3) Removing Spyware & Adware

If you've ever had spyware or adware on your computer, you know how frustrating it can be - strange things happening, your homepage changing, inappropriate popups, unfamiliar icons...
What exactly is spyware or adware?

Simply, files that are often downloaded onto your computer without your knowledge (or at least without you knowing what they really are).

Unfortunately, many of these programs "sneak" their way onto your computer, so avoiding them entirely is difficult, especially if you spend a lot of time on your computer, surfing the Internet and downloading new programs and files.

Fortunately, there are ways to remove these unwanted files from your computer.

Here are 2 adware/spyware removal programs that are simple to use (and both are free):
Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/>http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
Spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html>http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Why does adware/spyware continue to be such a problem? Because most of these programs make money for the people creating and spreading them, unfortunately. So, all we can do is try to avoid them as much as possible, and to remove them when they do find their way onto our computers.

If you do find spyware on your computer, don't panic. In many cases, you just have some extra "junk" on your computer. But keeping spywaer and adware off of your computer will help it run more quickly and efficiently.

4) Uninstalling Old & Unused Programs

While uninstalling old, unused programs will help speed up your computer, removing the wrong files can cause you some big problems. So, please proceed carefully. And if you are not comfortable, please ask for help from someone you know who is more knowledgeable.

Most programs that you download simply have an "uninstall" feature that comes with them. If you're like me and you download a lot of free programs or free trials, after a while your computer begins to slow down. That means it's time for me to remove some of the old programs I don't use any more (and most I only used once just to see how they work).

To uninstall unused programs from your computer, first click on the Start button on the bottom left, then Programs, then click on the name of the program and Uninstall. If there is no uninstall option, then click on the Start button on the bottom left, then Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.

Again, if you are unsure whether or not to remove a program, it is best to leave it.

If you follow these instructions, you should find your computer working faster right away.

5) Get A High Speed Internet Connection

If you spend a lot of time on the internet, a high speed internet connection is a must. It is more expensive, but for most people the savings in time and effort is worth the added expense.

There are several advantages of having a high speed internet connection - faster surfing, web pages open more quickly, files download faster, and if you send or receive large files, like pictures or video, trying to open these files with a slower dialup connection is extremely frustrating!

If you're already spending $20 a month or more for your dialup connection (through your phone line) then you'll find DSL to be comparable in price, and a lot faster.

A cable internet connection might cost a little more, but it is usually the fastest type of internet connection you can get from home.

High speed wireless connections are available for those who travel a lot. And high speed satellite internet is available in areas where other options are not (check your options first, as this is the most expensive high speed connection).

That's all the tips for increasing your computer speed and helping your computer run more efficiently. We hope you found these tips helpful!

Is It Time To Buy A New Computer?

Is It Time To Buy A New Computer?

Piter Gursky
Is It Time To Buy A New Computer?

With the Internet and computer technology developing every single day, you might want to give your old computer a long break it badly needs. Computer has gone a long way from being just a mere typing machine.
If you want to know whether you need to box-up your old computer or buy a new one, here's a quick checklist:

Operating system Run only in Windows 95/98 (or older operating systems!) Old operating systems won't allow you to add on scanners, printers, or dig cams. It also won't allow you to run newer programs.

Updated RAM  If your computer takes forever to load up, chances you need to add more RAM. Some old RAM chips might not be available in the market anymore and they don't come cheap too.
Small hard disk space Isn't it frustrating when you come to the point that you have to delete older files to make space for your new ones? This clearly states that you badly need a new hard disk. The market now offers as much as 500 GB for personal computers.

Software doesn't run  If new software doesn't work on your computer, then it is no longer compatible with new programs in the market, and you absolutely need to change your system.

Slow processors  If you are doing some graphic works on your computer, then it suddenly bogs down, then you are in trouble. Older computers don't even come close to opening website with large graphics.
If you find yourself in the above situation, then it's high-time that you buy a new computer. Below are some quick tips that can do you a lot of help:

Tips in Buying Computers
The first thing you need to ask when buying a computer is "what would it be used for?" If you just need to type up writing assignments or do some office works, then a computer with a decent word processing program would go.   If you were using the Internet often, then you would need a computer with 128 MB of memory and at least Pentium-2 processor.

If you do some graphics, edit pictures or create videos, aside from higher RAM and larger space, you need a good video card to view your work as actual as it can be. Also check the compatibility of other devices like scanners and printers to your computer.   If you are decided to buy a new computer, then allot at least $500 of your budget. If you want a high-end computer then it definitely costs a lot more than that. Don't think that you get the best deals when you buy a computer on a cheap price. Always go for quality, it's a total headache if your computer acts up in the middle of your work.

When buying a new computer, think properly what you need before heading to a computer shop. It is also a good thing to have a chit-chat with a computer salesperson. Ask them all the things you want to know. With enough patience, the right computer for you is just one decision away. For more info you may want to visit htt://www.baytradecomputers.com

Introduction:

So you went to customize.org and you saw the most badass desktop ever and you want to know how it's done right? now that you realize that posting a comment saying "great screenshot, how did you do this?" doesn't get you anywhere, this tutorial will attempt to reveal to you the basic steps of desktop customization in windows and point you in the right direction as to where to achieve more advanced effects.

Enabling WinXP to use 3rd party themes:

Universal UXTheme Patcher:
The UXTheme Patcher allows you to use any 3rd party msstyle theme on Windows XP/SP1/SP2 by patching the uxtheme.dll (dynamic link library).

Download UXTheme Multi-Patcher

Download visual style from any of these site:
- Neowin.net: Completed Visual Styles
- deviantART: Visual Styles
- Customize.org: XP VisualStyles

After you have downloaded the visual styles; usually in zip format; extract it to c:\windows\resources\themes\

Right click desktop > properties > appearance tab, select the visual style you just installed.

Another method is to use WindowBlinds; download here; also 30 days trial.
You can get themes for WindowBlinds from WinCustomize

Wallpaper:

As you may have guessed, your desktop background or "wallpaper" is integral to the overall look of your desktop theme.

A good rule of thumb for wallpapers is to always use one that has a solidly colored area so you can place your icons and other desktop elements without interfering with the wallpaper's focal point. This becomes a problem sometimes when you're using a wallpaper that has a lot of three dimensional work and doesn't really leave room for a blank area. This might require you to edit the wallpaper a bit to your liking and may be more trouble than it's worth.

some good resources for wallpapers are:

Why Do Computer Users Need Backup

Why Do Computer Users Need Backup
Computer Files Backup
Makabongwe Maseko

First whats the meaning of backup? Back up is the name given to diskettes, or disks that can store copies of programs and then stored elsewhere.

Even with the best of care, any disk can suddenly fail for reasons you cant understand. Many computer users have found themselves unable to retrieve data from disks that worked perfectly the day before, because some defect has damaged a single track or small sector. Hard disks do crash. Any personal computer system can be hit by power overloads, water or misconducts.

Thus, users and big or small companies should always think about backup. The best protection if youre writing, designing, researching something is to make two copies of your data. One copy may be on your hard disk, certainly, but duplicates should be on tape, disks or removable hard disks cartridges, recordable CD-ROMs or flash drives.

If you are backing up less than 10MB, you can use diskettes since that is the most they can take, if you are backing up more than 10MB, then a tape, disks or flash drives can be more efficient. If you work with files daily, then you would be most secure if you backed up all your files every day. If you work with files only occasionally, you need to determine how often backup is needed. And remember to keep the backup media in a different place. If your computer system and your backup disks are in the some structure and the place burns down, your backup is obviously worthless. So consider moving them to a different place or location.
Some microcomputer software programs provide automatic backup. One program would be with Colorado scheduler. What you do is you insert your disk in the disk drive and with a single mouse click on the Colorado scheduler icon, the computer takes care of the backup.

Almost all large computer systems have scheduled automatic backup of either full backup or only those files that have changed since the last backup session.

You should note that some storage medias last longer than others. We have seen tapes deteriorate day by day. And will eventually deteriarate in the next 5 years. But this also depends on how its stored. Hard disks cartridges have shelf life of about 10 years, according to most hard disks manufactures. You can get MO drives but they are more expensive yet also more durable.

The life span of a CD-ROM disk is almost unlimited. Thus you need to archive your backup material before deciding on a storage medium.

Now, be sure to have a timed backup strategy. By this, if you add and change data every day, set your backup software (if you have one) to back up those files every night. And you could keep two storage cartridges: a working one and one stored in safe place. Then exchange the cartridges on weekly bases.
Backing up your information and research has to be a must in your life. If you have not lost any work due to computer crushes, disk damage, or viruses then you better backup you data before it happens. Dont wait for it to happen to you.

System Strategy and Motherboard

System Strategy and Motherboard
 Zahir Shah

Motherboard is the subsequent most important component in your systems to the processor. It and its main components like chips, BIOS, cache etc are the main system that utilises to organize the rest of the computers, supposing the processor is the brain of a compute. Motherboard and his contained components is almost certainly most critical part of knowing to how a PCs work usually.

Following are the some of important functions which a motherboard plays on your systems:
Organization: Every part of your PC is finally connected to the Motherboard and in the track of that actually it is intended and laid out dictates how the whole PC is going to be organized.

Manage: Chips and BIOS program which included in motherboard organize the most data flow within the computer and motherboard.

Cannot Send or Receive Email on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

Cannot Send or Receive Email on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

The first thing you need to understand about mail on an iOS device is that The mail app is a mail client. It is similar to Microsoft Outlook or the Mail Application in Mac os x. -You cannot create a mail account by using the mail app, instead you need an existing mail account that you will then add into to the app. -Apple provides the settings for some commonly used mail accounts directly in iOS.

If you use Gmail, Yahoo, MobileMe or AOL all you need is your email address and email password to start sending and receiving mail from your device. If you have any other mail provider you will need some information before you waste your time troubleshooting. It is impossible to fix most mail issues without the right settings.

Contact your email provider and get the following settings: Incoming mail server, Outgoing mail server, correct username and passowrd settings for mail clients is, some use the full email address and some just what is before the @ symbol. Verify your email password. You can test it by logging into your mail provider's webmail. Ask if the email uses SSL, that is a security measure and their answer will be a simple yes or no.

In general, your mail issues will be limited to not being able to send or to receive mail or both. The first thing you want to do is to verify that your device has access to the internet by opening safari and browsing to a couple websites as a test. If you don't have access that is your issue not mail. Since you have all of your mail settings at this point resolving mail issues is straight forward. If you can't receive mail check you incoming mail settings, if you cant send then its your outgoing settings. Go to Settings> Mail contacts and Calendars and tap on the account you are having issues with. Correct any setting that is wrong. The outgoing settings you can access by taping on the SMTP server field. The incoming are under Advanced.

Note that there is a username and password for both incoming and outgoing severs even though the user name and password in general are the same for both (not the server). Usually the fastest method of fixing mail issues is to delete and simply re add your account into the Mail app. If you have your settings this will take a couple minutes at most. A second very rare mail issue you might come across is what appears to be some odd messages in your inbox. They might indicate that they have no content, no sender and a very odd date on them. If you can't delete them manually from your inbox do a reset on the iOS device by holding the sleep/wake button and home button at the same time until you see an apple appear (ignore the slide to power off bar) and they should disappear.

Note that some internet service providers like Road Runner or Cox in what they claim is an effort to reduce spam will not allow you to send mail unless you are connected to their network. That means you can only send mail if your are connected to wifi at home or in a place that uses their service. The only way to get around this is to send mail using their webmail service. Currently only that AT@T version of the iPhone and iPad 3g actually have an alternate outgoing mail server that you might and I stress might be able to use successfully. If you cannot send mail on an AT@T iPhone or iPad 3G, you can go to Settings> Mail contacts and calendars, tap on your account and under the SMPT server simply turn on the AT&T server. It will only work on 3G not Wi-Fi.

The corporate life is hectic, so it is important to have a fast, reliable, lightweight notebook that can maximize your daily output by keeping your projects organized and your workflow streamlined.

One of the first things you need to look for in a business laptop is wireless connectivity. A wireless networking card allows you to connect to the Internet via thousands of wireless networks (also called hotspots) located nationwide. This means more convenient and readily available access to your emails and business clientele.
Another great option is a bluetooth card, which will allow you to connect and transfer data between your PDAs and your notebook, without the need for messy wires, which can add weight and clutter to your carrying case.

A third feature to look for in a business notebook would be VGA and S-Video outputs to ensure connectivity with any projectors you may need to utilize for video or slideshow presentations.

As far as individual specifications, you really only need a base-line configuration with integrated graphics to handle any word processing or basic programs like email clients, DVD software, web browsers etc. Unless you plan on doing an inordinate amount of multi-tasking or video production, it would be wise to put any extra cash into other accessories like office suite software, which can really help you manage your day-to-day workload.

Whether at home or on the road, a good business laptop can really improve the quality of your work by providing you with all of the essential tools you need to efficiently manage your daily tasks. From planning your appointments and schedules to writing reports, sending email, and staying up-to-date with all of the latest business news and headlines, a business laptop is the only device that can effectively handle all of your work-related duties in one convenient, easy-to-use system.

How To Select The Best Gaming Laptops

Most veteran PC gamers know exactly what they want in a gaming laptop, and those who have the time and money have probably already built their dream computer themselves, but if you are a little newer to the field, a little more fond of the smaller notebook footprint, or a little less comfortable with a do-it-yourself computer, you need to be armed with these basic facts before purchasing your gaming laptop.

The three most important components for any high-end laptop are the processor, RAM and graphics card. Since you are building a gaming rig, you will want to focus on your graphics card first and foremost. Make sure you load up the video memory with at least 256MB and remember to select a notebook that has a dedicated graphics card. Integrated graphics simply cannot handle any modern, 3D gaming.

The next most important component is your processor. Dual-core CPUs are the hottest thing out right now. Ideally, you want to stay within the top two or three fastest dual-core CPUs, in terms of processor speed, that are currently available at the time of your purchase. This will ensure that your notebook is fully optimized for all of today's latest 3D games.

The third most important factor in the speed of your laptop is RAM. You will need at least 1GB to safely play most 3D games without any memory bottlenecking, although most hardcore gamers opt for 2GB or more just for the added punch and/or bragging rights.

The fourth and final tip would be to go with 7200rpm hard drives, as these will definitely speed up load times by adding some extra horsepower to your gaming machine.

With recent advancements in mobile technologies, laptops are now becoming more and more popular in the gaming community, as the prospect of a portable gaming rig that can produce desktop-like performance on the go is something that appeals to all gamers. Just remember to follow these four simple guidelines to ensure that your laptop will be able to meet or exceed all of the hardware requirements for your gaming sessions.
